About Ethereum
Ethereum (ETH) is the largest smart-contract platform and the settlement layer for most of the stablecoin supply, DeFi protocols and layer-2 rollups. ETH is used to pay for computation on the network (gas) and, since the 2022 Merge, to secure it through staking rather than mining.
The network's roadmap has focused on making rollups cheap: the Dencun upgrade (March 2024) introduced blob space for layer-2 data, Pectra (May 2025) raised validator limits and added account-abstraction features via EIP-7702, and subsequent upgrades continued to expand data capacity. For a user swapping ETH the practical effect is that mainnet gas for a simple transfer is usually low outside of congestion spikes.

ETH vs tokens on Ethereum
ETH is the native coin; USDT, USDC and thousands of other tokens are ERC-20 contracts that live on the same network and are paid for in ETH gas. When you swap into an ERC-20 token, you need a small amount of ETH in the receiving wallet to move it later. When you swap into ETH itself, no other asset is needed.
Ethereum addresses are the same across ETH and ERC-20 tokens — a 0x address holds both. The same address format also exists on other EVM networks (BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Base), so always check the network label in the form before sending or receiving.
