How to hold RWA tokens in self-custody: chains, wallets, transfer restrictions, redemption and exit routes

A practical guide for holding tokenised gold, Treasuries and other real-world assets in your own wallet: picking the right chain and contract, wallet and gas setup, checking allowlists, reading redemption terms, keeping records, what a freeze or delisting means, and how to exit without an exchange account.

Step 1: find the chain and the contract

An RWA token exists on the chain where the issuer deployed it, and nowhere else. Copies on other networks are either bridged wrappers or partner issuances with their own terms. Start from the issuer's website, not from an explorer search, because explorers list impostor contracts with the same ticker.

TokenIssuer's canonical chainWhat it isTransfer restrictions
PAXGEthereum (ERC-20)GoldNone; freeze function exists
XAUTEthereum (ERC-20); versions on other networksGoldNone; freeze function exists
ONDOEthereum (ERC-20)Governance token of Ondo Finance, not an RWANone
USDYEthereum, Solana and several othersYield-bearing note backed by Treasuries and depositsLock-up after minting; non-US persons only; freeze
OUSG, BUIDLEthereum plus other networksTokenised Treasury fundsAllowlisted wallets only
RLUSDEthereum and the XRP LedgerDollar stablecoinNone; freeze

Copy the contract address from the issuer's page and add it to your wallet manually. If a balance does not appear after a transfer, the usual cause is a wallet that has not been told about the contract, not a lost transfer.

Step 2: wallet and gas

Use a hardware wallet for the keys and an EVM software wallet as the interface; the tokens above are ordinary ERC-20 or SPL tokens and need nothing special. Keep them in a wallet separate from the one you use for DeFi approvals and airdrop claims, so that one bad signature elsewhere cannot touch them.

Hold a gas reserve on every chain you use: ETH on Ethereum and Base, SOL on Solana, XRP on the XRP Ledger. A wallet holding PAXG and no ETH cannot move the PAXG. Ethereum fees vary widely, so keep enough for several transfers at a busy moment.

Before the first real transfer, send a small test amount and confirm it arrives and shows in the wallet.

Step 3: check transfer restrictions before you move anything

Permissionless tokens, such as PAXG, XAUT and ONDO, can be sent to any address. Allowlisted tokens, such as OUSG and BUIDL, can only move between addresses the issuer has approved; a transfer to any other address reverts, which costs you gas but not the tokens. USDY sits in between: freely transferable after its lock-up, but sold only to eligible non-US persons.

How to check: read the issuer's documentation, look at the contract on an explorer for functions that check an allowlist, and, if in doubt, send a tiny amount first. Never assume that because a token appeared in your wallet you can send it onward.

Step 4: read the redemption terms

The terms answer five questions. Write the answers down.

  1. Minimum size. Physical gold redemption at both Paxos and Tether is for whole London Good Delivery bars, about 400 troy ounces each, so hundreds of tokens; smaller amounts are redeemed for cash or through retail partners. Treasury tokens have their own minimums.
  2. Verification. Redemption always requires an account with the issuer and passing its KYC, even for tokens that trade freely. Some issuers exclude whole jurisdictions; XAUT and USDY exclude US persons.
  3. Fees. Redemption and physical delivery fees, and any custody fee model.
  4. Settlement time. Same day, several business days, or longer for physical delivery.
  5. Exclusions. Who the issuer will not serve. If that is you, the secondary market is your only exit, and its depth is the real measure of the token's backing.

Step 5: keep records

For every position keep the contract address, transaction hashes, dates, amounts and cost basis, a copy of the issuer's terms at the time of purchase, and the issuer's attestation or audit reports, which for the gold tokens are published regularly and list the bars. Terms change; a saved copy is your evidence of what you agreed to. Every swap into or out of an RWA token is a disposal for tax purposes in most jurisdictions, and gold may have separate rules where you live.

If the issuer freezes or delists

Freeze. A frozen balance cannot move. The only recourse is the issuer's compliance process, which means identifying yourself. This is the case for every regulated RWA token, permissionless or not.

Exchange delisting. The token still exists and still works on-chain. What disappears is liquidity. Redemption with the issuer remains available to verified holders.

Issuer wind-down. Regulated issuers announce a notice period and redeem verified holders for cash. Unverified holders have to verify within the window or are left with a token that no longer represents anything. Watch the issuer's announcements for the tokens you hold.

Contract migration. Issuers sometimes deploy a new contract and ask holders to swap. Only follow instructions published on the issuer's own site; migration announcements are a common phishing lure.

Exit routes without an exchange account

PAXG has a dedicated pair. Open the PAXG to BTC pair, enter the amount and your Bitcoin address, optionally a refund address, and click Swap now. Send exactly the shown amount from your wallet to the deposit address. The rate locks when the deposit reaches 100 Ethereum confirmations, roughly twenty minutes, and BTC is sent to your address. No login at any step.

XAUT, ONDO and PLUME are available in the swap form on the homepage as the source: choose the token, pick USDT TRC-20 or BTC as the destination, and proceed the same way. For other legs, the USDT ERC-20 to BTC and ETH to USDT TRC-20 pairs are on their own pages.

OUSG, BUIDL and USDY are not in the swap form. Their exits are the issuer's redemption process or, where the token is permissionless, a DEX pool.

The cost of any exit is the Ethereum fee you pay to send the deposit plus the spread and payout network fee built into the quote; the pair page shows the all-in cost for a sample amount.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Holding a token you can never redeem. Check eligibility before the size you buy exceeds what the secondary market can absorb.
  • No gas. An RWA position with zero ETH beside it is not liquid.
  • Wrong contract. A token with the right ticker and the wrong address is worth nothing.
  • Trusting a migration link. Verify on the issuer's site, never from a message.
