Solana memecoins guide: BONK, WIF and TRUMP, the checks before you buy, and how to swap in and out

How Solana memecoin liquidity really works: AMM pools, LP burn versus lock, mint and freeze authority. The checks to run before buying, wallet hygiene, the record-keeping you will need, and the SOL and USDT routes for entering and exiting without an exchange account.

What a Solana memecoin is

A Solana memecoin is an SPL token with no product behind it. Its price is set entirely by trading in automated market maker pools, and its supply, authorities and liquidity are all visible on-chain if you know where to look. Three examples cover the range:

  • BONK was launched in December 2022 and most of the supply was airdropped to Solana users and builders. It later grew a set of tools around it, including a trading bot and a launchpad, which makes it the closest thing to a memecoin with infrastructure.
  • WIF, dogwifhat, was launched in December 2023. It has no team product and no roadmap; it is the pure form of the asset class.
  • TRUMP was launched in January 2025 by entities affiliated with the Trump family. The majority of its supply was held by the issuer-affiliated entities under an unlock schedule at launch, and its liquidity was seeded on Meteora. It is the example of a memecoin with a single dominant holder.

How memecoin liquidity works

Memecoins trade in AMM pools on venues such as Raydium, Orca, Meteora and PumpSwap. A pool holds the token and SOL, or the token and USDC, and prices each trade against its reserves. Small pools mean large price impact: a buy that is big relative to the reserves moves the price against you before it fills, and the same applies when you sell.

Whoever deposits liquidity receives LP tokens that can withdraw it again. That is the first thing to check. If the LP tokens were burned, the liquidity is permanent. If they were locked, it is permanent until the lock expires, so the expiry date matters. If they are simply held by a wallet, that wallet can remove the pool at any time. Concentrated-liquidity pools add a subtlety: liquidity placed in a price range does nothing outside that range, so a "locked" position can still leave the market with no depth at the current price.

Two authorities live on the token itself. The mint authority can create more tokens; if it has not been revoked, the supply is whatever the holder decides. The freeze authority can freeze any token account, which means your tokens can be made unsendable. Tokens issued under the Token-2022 program can also carry extensions such as a transfer fee or a permanent delegate that can move tokens out of any account, so a Token-2022 mint deserves a closer look.

Run all of them: a revoked mint authority with an unburned pool is still a rug waiting to happen.

Wallet hygiene

Use a burner wallet for memecoin activity: a wallet that holds only what you are prepared to lose, with its own seed phrase, never connected to the wallet that holds your main balances. Do not sign transactions you cannot read. Wallets that show a simulation of what a transaction does are worth using for that reason, and a transaction that asks for a token delegate or an account authority change should be refused unless you know why it needs it. Revoke delegates you no longer need. Ignore tokens that appear in your wallet uninvited; many carry a link to a site that drains whatever wallet interacts with it, and interacting with the token is the trap.

Records and tax

Swapping without an account does not change your reporting position. In most jurisdictions each swap is a disposal of one asset for another and is taxable on the difference, and memecoin trading produces a large number of them. Keep the transaction signatures, dates, amounts and the counter-asset for every trade; an explorer can export a wallet's history, and doing that while the wallet is active is far easier than reconstructing it later.

How to enter and exit without an account

SOL is the working asset. It pays fees, funds the rent-exempt deposit every token account needs, and is what memecoin pools are usually paired with.

Entering:

  1. Open the USDT TRC-20 to SOL pair, enter the amount and your Solana address, and click Swap now. Both sides need one confirmation, so the swap is quick.
  2. Send exactly the shown USDT amount to the deposit address. SOL arrives at your address.
  3. Buy the memecoin in your wallet's swap feature or on the DEX of your choice, after the checks above.

BONK, WIF and TRUMP are also available in the swap form, so you can receive them directly to your Solana address without going through SOL. Keep in mind that a wallet holding only a memecoin and no SOL cannot send anything, so fund it with a little SOL either way.

Exiting:

  1. Sell the memecoin for SOL or USDC in your wallet.
  2. For SOL, open the SOL to USDT TRC-20 pair, enter the amount and your Tron address, and send the SOL. For USDC on Solana, the USDC-Solana to USDT BEP-20 pair does the same job with a BNB Chain address as the destination.
  3. BONK, WIF and TRUMP can also be chosen as the source directly in the swap form.

The cost is the deposit's network fee plus the spread and payout network fee built into the quote.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Checking one thing. Revoked mint authority alone is not a safety signal.
  • Buying a large share of a small pool. Price impact on the way in is matched by price impact on the way out.
  • Using your main wallet. One bad signature can empty everything in it.
  • Chasing a name. Copycat mints with a famous ticker appear within minutes of any trend.
