About Ethereum Name Service

Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a decentralized protocol that maps human-readable names (like 'alice.eth') to Ethereum addresses, IPFS hashes, and other identifiers. ENS eliminates the need to copy-paste long hexadecimal wallet addresses when sending crypto. The ENS token governs the protocol DAO, which controls the ENS root, pricing parameters, and protocol upgrades. ENS domains are NFTs on Ethereum, tradeable on OpenSea and other NFT marketplaces. With over 3 million registered .eth names, ENS is the standard naming layer for Ethereum and is integrated into MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, and most major wallets.

History

2017
ENS launches as an Ethereum Foundation project, enabling .eth domain registration on Ethereum.
2019
ENS migrates to permanent registrar using Vickrey auction replaced by annual fee model.
2021
ENS DAO launches; ENS token airdropped to all .eth domain holders. ENS raises $100M through token launch.
2022
ENS surpasses 1 million registered names; .eth domains become sought-after digital identity assets.
2023
ENS introduces ENSIP-10 wildcard resolution and off-chain name resolution via CCIP-Read.
2024
ENS V2 development progresses with ENSv2 on L2, reducing registration costs through Layer-2 integration.

How to Swap ENS

To swap Ethereum Name Service (ENS) on SyntheticSwap, no account creation or KYC is required. ENS runs on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token, compatible with MetaMask, Ledger, Rainbow, and any Web3 wallet. Navigate to SyntheticSwap, choose ENS as either source or target, enter your wallet address for the destination asset, and send ENS from your personal wallet to the deposit address shown. Swaps typically settle within a few Ethereum block confirmations, and your destination asset lands directly in your specified wallet.

How to Store ENS

ENS (ERC-20) is stored in MetaMask, Ledger, Trust Wallet, or any Ethereum wallet. Note: the ENS token (governance) is different from ENS domain NFTs (.eth names). Both are stored in Ethereum wallets, but ENS domains are ERC-721 NFTs while ENS tokens are ERC-20.
