tBTC is a decentralized ERC-20 token on Ethereum backed 1:1 by Bitcoin, maintained by the Threshold Network (formed by the merger of Keep Network and NuCypher). Unlike centralized wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) which relies on BitGo as custodian, tBTC uses threshold cryptography (threshold ECDSA) where a randomly selected group of signers collectively control the Bitcoin without any single party having access to private keys. This makes tBTC trust-minimized and censorship-resistant. tBTC v2 improved capital efficiency by removing the requirement for signers to post ETH collateral, making the system more scalable.
