How to move USDT from Ethereum (ERC-20) to TRON (TRC-20) without an exchange

Step by step: turning ERC-20 Tether into TRC-20 Tether in one transaction — what to check, what it costs, how long it takes, and the mistakes that lose funds.

Why people do this

USDT on Ethereum is what you get from most exchanges and DeFi protocols. Every transfer costs gas in ETH, and on a busy day that can be several dollars. USDT on TRON costs cents to move and settles in seconds, and it is the network that P2P desks and most wallets in Asia, Africa and Latin America expect. Moving your dollars from ERC-20 to TRC-20 once saves fees on every transfer after that.

The traditional route — deposit to an exchange, withdraw on TRON — needs an account, identity verification, two fees and a wait for withdrawal approval. A network swap does the same job with a single deposit and no account.

Before you start

  1. A TRON address to receive on. It starts with T and is 34 characters long. Get it from TronLink, Trust Wallet, a Ledger, or the TRON deposit page of the service you are sending to. Do not use an Ethereum 0x address — TRC-20 USDT cannot go there.
  2. ETH for gas in the sending wallet. The ERC-20 deposit is an Ethereum transaction; without ETH it never leaves your wallet.
  3. The amount you actually want to move. Look at the live minimum and maximum on the USDT ERC-20 → USDT TRC-20 page. If you are sending from an exchange, remember that many deduct their withdrawal fee from the amount, so enter the figure that will arrive, not the figure you type at the exchange.
  4. A refund address (recommended). An Ethereum 0x address you control. If the deposit lands outside the limits or the swap cannot complete, funds are returned there.

Step by step

  1. Open USDT (ERC-20) → USDT (TRC-20). The form is already set to this direction.
  2. Enter the amount of USDT. The estimated TRC-20 amount you will receive updates live; it is slightly below the amount sent because it already includes the exchange spread and the TRON payout fee.
  3. Paste your TRON address. Optionally add the Ethereum refund address.
  4. Click Swap now. You get a unique Ethereum deposit address for this swap and a status page — bookmark it; there is no login.
  5. Send exactly the shown amount of USDT (ERC-20) to the deposit address from your wallet or exchange. Choose a gas setting that confirms within a few minutes.
  6. Wait. The deposit is credited after 15 Ethereum confirmations, about three minutes. The TRC-20 payout is broadcast right after and appears at your TRON address within seconds.

Total time in normal conditions: under five minutes. The rate is floating and is locked when the deposit confirms; since both sides are dollars, drift is negligible.

What it costs

Three components:

  • Your Ethereum gas to send the deposit — set by the network at that moment, paid in ETH from your wallet.
  • The exchange spread, built into the quoted amount.
  • The TRON payout fee, also built into the quote.

Because the market rate between the two networks is exactly 1:1, the difference between what you send and what you receive is the entire cost. The pair page shows it live for a sample amount, as a percentage against the market rate, so you can compare it with what an exchange would charge for a deposit plus a withdrawal.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Wrong destination network. Pasting an Ethereum address for the payout is caught by the form (it expects a T… address). Pasting a TRON address that belongs to an exchange deposit page which does not accept TRC-20 USDT is not — check the service supports TRON before you swap.
  • Sending USDT on the wrong network to the deposit address. The deposit address is an Ethereum address that expects ERC-20 USDT. Sending BEP-20 or Polygon USDT to it "works" on-chain but the funds arrive on a network the swap is not watching. Use the wallet's network selector; if you hold BEP-20, use the BEP-20 → TRC-20 page instead.
  • Not leaving ETH for gas. If you send your entire ETH balance elsewhere first, the USDT transfer fails.
  • Amounts below the minimum. They cannot be swapped and are only returned if you gave a refund address, minus gas.
  • Tiny swaps. The payout fee is fixed per transaction; on very small amounts it is a large share. One larger swap is cheaper than several small ones.

After it arrives

Your TRON wallet now holds USDT (TRC-20). To send it onward you need bandwidth or energy: a few TRX in the wallet, or an energy rental from within most TRON wallets. Receiving needed nothing, sending does.

Going back

The reverse direction, USDT TRC-20 → USDT ERC-20, works the same way. The minimum is higher because the payout is an Ethereum transaction whose gas is included in the quote, and you will need ETH in the receiving wallet to move the tokens afterwards.
